3.95 billion-year-old graphite locked in quartz, Tsuyoshi Komiya, The University of Tokyo. This was such an exciting find becasue the properties of this graphite suggests life existed at the time, so according to the Smithsonian, this means "life was churning away soon after Earth’s formation".
